The Eridian day is the fundamental unit of time on the Eridian homeworld, Erid, defined as the period it takes for the planet to complete one full rotation on its axis. It is a critical piece of shared knowledge that Ryland Grace and Rocky establish early in their communication, allowing them to synchronize their activities and build a common scientific vocabulary. The Eridian day is precisely 7,776 Eridian seconds long, a number that is six to the fifth power, reflecting the Eridians' base-six numerical system. This unit is not merely a measure of time but a cultural and scientific bridge between two alien species, enabling them to coordinate their efforts to save their respective worlds.

Rocky first reveals the length of the Eridian day to Grace during their early attempts to establish a shared system of measurement. When Grace asks how long Rocky has been alone in the Tau Ceti system, Rocky needs new words to express the duration. He explains that "seven thousand seven hundred and seventy-six seconds is ♩♫♩♪♪. Erid rotate one circle in one ♩♫♩♪♪." Grace immediately recognizes the number: 7,776 is six to the fifth power, which is exactly how many Eridian seconds it takes for an Eridian clock to wrap around to all zeroes again. This means the Eridians divided their day into a very convenient and, to them, metric number of seconds. The Eridian day is thus a direct product of their base-six counting system, which itself likely evolved from their having six fingers for counting—three on each of two hands.

The Eridian day is the foundational unit from which other Eridian time measurements are derived. Rocky explains that an Eridian year—the time it takes for Erid to complete one orbit around its star, 40 Eridani—is 198.8 Eridian days long.
